Tokyo 1964 focuses on the factual story of Miwako, a Japanese woman who divorced from an arranged marriage in 1964 and then moved to France, in pursuit of her ambitions in fashion. In order to better understand Miwako, I researched the period in which she decided to divorce, focusing on 1964 in Tokyo, and “divorce” in Japanese culture. 1964 in Japan was a year full of turmoil, both in the social field and in terms of
inter-connectivity with the rest of the world. 1964 was the year of the Olympic games, broadcast internationally for the first time, the year in which the Tokaido Shinkansen, one of Japan’s fastest trains, was inaugurated to the public, but also the year in which all Japanese were permitted to freely travel overseas.
